The Savage Gear SG8 BC is a range of low profile baitcasting reels designed for predator fishing with artificial lures. Combining a rigid one-piece aluminium frame with an externally adjustable centrifugal braking system and a smooth-running mechanism, these reels offer the versatility needed for different casting techniques. The SG8 BC series is designed for use with baitcasting rods and a wide variety of artificial lures, from smaller soft plastics and crankbaits to larger soft lures and jerkbaits. The reels are suitable for targeting predators such as pike, zander, perch, bass and trout, providing the control and mechanical strength required for casting, lure retrieval and fighting powerful fish.
At the heart of the Savage Gear SG8 BC is a strong one-piece aluminium frame designed to provide rigidity and stability under load. The aluminium side plates feature a protective EDP coating, while the compact, ergonomic body allows comfortable handling during repeated casts and lure retrieval. The construction also incorporates a separate stainless steel reel foot and a brass worm shaft within the line guide mechanism. These components contribute to a solid and dependable baitcasting reel designed for demanding predator fishing applications.
One of the most important features of the Savage Gear SG8 BC is its externally adjustable centrifugal braking system. This mechanism helps control spool rotation during casting and allows anglers to adjust braking performance according to lure weight, casting technique and fishing conditions. By regulating spool speed, the system helps reduce the risk of unwanted line overruns and tangles. External adjustment makes it easier to change the braking settings when switching between different lures. The reel also features a non-loss spool tension knob, designed to reduce the risk of accidentally losing the adjustment knob during use.
The SG8 BC mechanism features a 7+1 steel bearing system, including two Japanese ball bearings. This arrangement supports smooth operation during lure retrieval and when fighting fish. The internal components also benefit from DuraGrease lubrication, which helps reduce friction between moving parts and maintain consistent mechanical performance. EVA handle knobs provide a comfortable and secure grip when retrieving lures or applying pressure during a fight. Together, these features contribute to a baitcasting reel designed to perform reliably under different fishing loads.
The Savage Gear SG8 BC also incorporates the Dragclicker system, providing audible feedback when line is released against the drag during a fight. This allows anglers to monitor drag operation through an additional sound indication when a powerful fish takes line. Another practical feature is Line-ID, which enables anglers to identify the fishing line loaded onto the reel. This is particularly useful when using several baitcasting setups with different line diameters or breaking strains, helping keep equipment organised and making it easier to select the appropriate setup for a particular fishing technique.
The Savage Gear SG8 BC range includes baitcasting reels in sizes 100, 250 and 300, allowing anglers to choose a suitable combination of reel size, spool capacity and drag performance. The 100 and 250 sizes provide versatile options for casting smaller soft lures and crankbaits, while also accommodating medium and larger artificial lures. The larger 300 size offers increased line capacity and greater drag power, making it suitable for more demanding predator fishing with larger lures. Different gear ratios allow anglers to select a suitable retrieval speed for their preferred lure presentation and fishing technique.
The size 100 models additionally feature a hinged side plate, providing convenient access to the reel's internal components. With its one-piece aluminium frame, adjustable centrifugal braking system, 7+1 bearings and practical Line-ID and Dragclicker features, the Savage Gear SG8 BC series offers a robust and versatile solution for anglers looking for well-equipped baitcasting reels for active predator fishing.
