Savage Gear Mutant Rat is a large hybrid pike lure designed to imitate a rat moving through the water. The combination of a hard head, soft trailer and broad fibre collar creates a distinctive, substantial profile. It is intended primarily for targeting pike, especially when a large lure presented at a slow pace is needed to tempt bigger fish.
The open mouth design takes in water during the retrieve and directs it towards the polyester fibre collar. This makes the fibres pulse and creates noticeable water disturbance even at low speeds. Mutant Rat can be worked slowly with short pulls and pauses, allowing the soft components and long tail to continue moving throughout the retrieve.
The lure is slow sinking. The 24 cm (9.4") version weighs 68 g and is designed to work at approximately 0.5–1.5 m, while the 30 cm (11.8") model weighs 125 g and runs at around 1–2 m. An additional attachment point beneath the head allows extra weight to be added when the lure needs to be fished deeper.
